When I walked into the Double Door on Thursday, I had a fever. A fever caused by bullshit, chart-topping, bubblegum pop masquerading as legitimate feel good music. The only solution? More cowbell, of course. Free Energy delivered on every possible level.
The 70′s style they so closely resemble trades “free love” for Free Energy, but the crowd at the the Double Door couldn’t have been more receptive. Vacillating between a mustache-led sing-along and a non-stop dance party, audience participation wasn’t suggested – it was expected.
Between the thumping cowbell and the meedly meedly riffs on the feather-embellished guitar, the men of Free Energy took the entire crowd on a journey they won’t soon forget. The only thing disappointing about the show was the fact that it had to end, but even that isn’t all that bad since it culminated with their own “Free Energy” and a throwback cover of Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down.”
