Freelance Whales and Tokyo Police Club at The Metro

Tokyo Police Club and Freelance Whales came through Chicago and played at the Metro last Friday. Tokyo Police Club was wrapping up their tour before making their long drive back to Canada and Freelance Whales were busy prepping for a couple UK festival shows (and after-parties) with the Reading and Leeds festivals this week. Freelance Whales were definitely in warm-up mode for these festivals during their set. I don’t mean to say this was a bad show by any means. They seemed extremely focused on the music and there was less laughing and smiling between the bandmates than the other times they have played Chicago. They did take a minute to give a heartfelt thank you to Chicago being like a ‘second home’ to the band after 5 or so shows all over town from Schuba’s  to Lollapalooza since February. As Tokyo Police Club came on the stage it was easy to tell that nearly all of the crowd had come to see them as they were greeted with a loud ovation from the steam filled and stuffy Metro. The giant fans (that had to be nearly overheating) didn’t stand a chance of cooling off the room as the entire dancefloor shuffled back and forth with every song and much of the crowd singing along with nearly every word lead singer Dave Monks belted out.
