The Bloody Beetroots Death Crew 77 at Lollapalooza 2011

Perry’s Stage at Lollapalooza might have been where eardrums went to die for most of the weekend, but for an hour on Friday – right around dinner time – it became the Church of Noise. The proctors of the evening’s ceremony were none other than The Bloody Beetroots Death Crew 77.

From the moment they walked onto the stage clad in Venom masks (the bad guy from Spider-Man if you’re not familiar) it was clear this wasn’t going to be just another Ibiza imitation staged in Grant Park. As much live stage show as it is concert performance, The Bloody Beetroots have a way of taking what you think about hybridized live electronic and flipping it on it’s head-  much like the overzealous fans crammed into Perry’s aircraft hangar in the park. And if you think it’s just the pill poppers enjoying themselves, you’d be wrong. The Bloody Beetroots set was like being invited to a party in an alternate Tarantino costumed universe with thousands of your closest friends.

The only way to truly experience a spectacle like Blood Beetroots is to put a Dyson into a garbage disposal, free base and then jump into a washing machine. Does that sound absolutely ridiculous? Of course it does, but Bloody Beetroots sounds pretty ridiculous too. See them live just once and you’ll understand exactly what it means to worship at the Church of Noise. As a convert, it’s an experience that shouldn’t be missed.
